Santa Paula is one of the last remaining historic downtowns in Southern California! The site is part of Santa Paula's original old town tract. The city was founded in 1875 and residences as well as businesses began to spring up on Main Street after the discovery of oil in the valley.
One of the early residences, 111 North 8th Street, was on the site of the Santa Paula INN, formerly known as the Jackson Hotel. Mr. Ernest French built the hotel, and lived in the house with his family in 1917. Mr. French had several successful businesses and was able to build a larger building which served as his home. It was constructed by local builders using tile blocks and cement foundation about 1920. Several old timers recall the St. Francis Dam Disaster of March 1928 when the building became a resting stop where many of the disaster victims could be reunited with their families.
From 1934 to 1941, the building remained vacant except when it was used as a beauty shop in 1937 by Mrs. Lola Ellis.
Over the years the hotel has had a mixed reputation, including a house of ill-repute. Jewel French, daughter of Ernest, remembers her father ran a decent hotel. Many of the hotel's customers would be businessmen associated with Texaco and Standard Oil Companies, and Brogdex Food Machinery associated with the citrus industry.
Mr. French sold the hotel in 1940 and it has had several owners until 2002 when it was beautifully renovated into a small town bed and breakfast with the true country flavor of Santa Paula.

Dear Dave and Donna,
"We again enjoyed your hospitality and the convenience of your location during our club's annual year-end membership party. Your patio was a perfect location for our group, and we were
able to enjoy the car show on Main Street along with the music and vendor booths.
Thanks again!"

To Donna and David Stewart:
"The Santa Paula Inn was a nice break from the hustle-bustle in town. I slept more soundly than I had been able to in weeks! Thanks!
Sincerely,"
